// Drone Awareness Foundations

Your team is integrating drones into SAR operations and you need a foundation that's built around real rescue work — not generic drone training? The answer is likely yes.

SAR Drone Tech 1 is designed for SAR teams establishing or formalizing their drone program, first responders who need to bring drone operations into existing rescue workflows, and Basic-licensed pilots whose work centres on emergency response, hazard assessment, and area reconnaissance.

// What Youll Learn

// What Youll Learn

RPAS Safety & Compliance:

Fundamental safety protocols and Transport Canada regulatory requirements specific to SAR drone operations

Daytime VLOS Operations:

Operational procedures and protocols for conducting visual line of sight missions in search and rescue environments

RGB Sensor Operation:

Visual sensor setup, operation, and data interpretation for aerial reconnaissance and area coverage

Mission Planning:

Search pattern design, area coverage strategies, and pre-flight planning for SAR deployments

Emergency Procedures:

Pre-flight checklists, normal and emergency response protocols, and operational risk management

Team Communication:

Coordination protocols for integrating drone operations within a SAR team during active missions

By the end of SAR Drone Tech 1, your team will be ready to:

  • Run safe, compliant VLOS daytime SAR missions using RGB sensors

  • Develop your team's Standard Operating Procedures using the CONOPS framework

  • Coordinate drone operations within your existing Incident Command System

  • Plan hasty searches, conduct hazard assessments, and execute hub-area reconnaissance

  • Manage flight emergencies and coordinate with SAR teams and regulatory bodies

  • Use Nova software for mission data processing and analysis

  • Move on to SAR Drone Tech 2 once your team holds Transport Canada Advanced

// What to Expect

// What to Expect

FlySmart's SAR Drone Tech 1 course is grounded in lived operational experience. With over 150 deployments shaping how the curriculum is built. You'll work through self-paced modules covering everything from mission planning fundamentals to data analysis in Nova, with the CONOPS framework giving your team a ready-to-deploy operational structure.

By the end, you'll have built the confidence to manage basic SAR drone missions and laid the groundwork to grow into more advanced operations through SAR Drone Tech 2.
